Basque-ing in the Glory

Hi, Tyler here.

Some of you will be aware that I’ve been away in Scotland these past several months. Some of you may also be aware that I’ve never published a solo post on this blog before (though Skyler often does), as I don’t consider myself to be much of a photographer. So join me on this auspicious occasion, and try not to judge too harshly, as we take a look at… Spain. Specifically the small seaside city of San Sebastian.

This city (known as Donostia in the native Basque language) lies on Spain’s North coast along the Bay of Biscay, just a short way from the French border. I didn’t choose this town for any particular reason, and even upon my arrival I knew very little about it or the Basque region. Traveling with too many expectations can lead to disappointment, which wasn’t the aim of this trip.

The town was beautifully laid-back, and the beaches and streets were blessedly devoid of overwhelming crowds. Many times I was able to find myself alone in some park or on one of the trails following the cliffs that stretched far and away either way along the coastline. These trails often followed worn steps, some made of cobblestone and others that appeared to have been carved from the rock centuries ago. They led to ruins of crumbling fortifications, now hidden away by ferns and thistles.

These ruins were just one more testament to the wars which had plagued this area in ages past. The Basque people love their home, and even today many of them want to see a Basque nation independent of Spain. Perhaps one day they will see success.

And that’s all for now. Take care!
